The forgetting curve is steep, and it's steepest early

Hermann Ebbinghaus's 19th-century memory experiments showed that most forgetting happens fast — a large share of new information is gone within the first day if it's never revisited. The curve then flattens: what survives the first review tends to stick around much longer.

Testing yourself beats rereading, by a wide margin

Pulling information out of memory — via flashcards, practice questions, or just closing the book and recalling — strengthens it far more than reading it again. Researchers call this the testing effect, and it's one of the most replicated findings in learning science.
